A lot of my conversations with people at some point have some reference to “last night during my evening stroll” or “last week during my evening stroll.”
That’s because walking has become the best little simple pleasure in my life.
If I walk by a big oak tree, and the leaves are blowing around in the breeze, then I’m in heaven.
When I walk by an oak tree, I know what it is because I watched a documentary for uber-geeks only on Curiosity Stream about a man who spent an entire year with multiple wired-up cameras observing every last deal of what went on with an oak tree throughout the 4 seasons.
So, I know an oak tree when I see one, having spent 90 minutes staring at oak trees.
However, once in a while my evening stroll would veer off the beaten path and go down some little country road or someplace where the flora and fauna were slightly different from what you’d see on a residential street.
Then I would wish I was one of those true nature lovers who could identify the things I was passing along the way.
I had this little wish for a few years, then in 2022 I took care of it.
I found a delightful app that lets you take a picture of any plant and the app will identify the plant for you.
It’s called Plantum. That’s on my IOS device and is only available for IOS.
If you’re like me and you prefer doing nature walks without your phone, there is a way to still identify everything.
A free product that is available on both android and IOS does the same thing. That app is called Flora Incognito and it is terrific.
I always go walking with a mini tablet that I use to listen to podcasts while walking.
I installed Flora Incognito on the mini tablet, and took all my pictures of plants I didn’t recognize while walking.
Then when I got home, the minute I turned on the WIFI, it told me what everything was.
I also shared this app with some nature loving co-workers and they really appreciated it.
